Internet Backbone some tips
On the internet a Backbone is a set of paths that local or regional networks connect for long distance interconnection. The connection points are known as network nodes or Data Switching Exchanges(DSEs).
History of Internet Backbone :
The first Internet Backbone was named as NSFNET. It was founded by the US Government and introduced by National Science Foundation(NSF) in 1987. It was T1 line, that consisted of approximately 170 smaller networks operated at 1.544 Mbps. The Backbone was a combination of fiber-optic cables which were together to increase transmission capacity.
Conclusion :
Around the world, each country has at least one backbone networks that operates at very high speed and carries bulk of the traffic. It is the largest data connection on the internet. Some large companies that provides Internet Backbones connectivity that are Verizon, British Telecom, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Global Crossing telecom, BSNL, Relience Telecom, Airtel, VSNL, Ortel Telecom, Tata Tele Service etc.
